JAYS SEND 10 TO SECTIONALS

Citizen Staff Report

West Platte senior Zach Layton and junior Will Fraundorfer continued their season-long dominance May 3 at the Class 2 District 8 meet held at Eagle Stadium in St. Joseph .

Layton won the 1,600-meter run with a time of four-minutes, 40.47-seconds and the 3,200 with a time of 10:20.42, 18 seconds ahead of his nearest competitor. Fraudorfer won the 100 in 11.03, the 200 in 22.59 and the 400 in 50.98.

“Will was a particular highlight,” West Platte coach Charles Yaw said. “I don’t remember the last boy to sweep the three open sprints at our district and I don’t think it has been done since I have been the head coach. Amber Guthrie did it for us in 2005 on the girls’ side.”

Also advancing to the sectional meet this Saturday at Cass-Midway were the 1,600 relay team of Fraundorfer, Shawn Goodsmith, Chase Arnold and Kody Clemens and the 3,200 meter team of Layton, Goodsmith, Will Wilson and Clemens, both which placed fourth. Layton , who grabbed his fourth and fifth district titles, also had a personal best of 2:04 for his leg of the 3,200 relay. As a team, West Platte score 74 points and placed fifth, behind Trenton (159.50), Hamilton (97), Lathrop (95.50) and Lawson (81.50).

On the girls side, West Platte placed 12th in the 14-team field, with the 3,200 team of Cecily Waddell, Caitlin Brady, Tara Holden and Tessa Gillis qualifying for sectionals with a fourth place finish and a time of 10:54.53.

“Overall, I thought our kids gave an excellent effort,” Yaw said. “Five district champions is outstanding. All the individuals and teams we qualified will have an excellent opportunity to advance to the state meet this coming weekend at sectionals.”

Dirk Hudson in the 3,200 and Clemens in the 800 both ran personal bests and just missed out on qualifying with fifth place finishes, while Trent Gaskill set a personal best mark in the 110 hurdles and placed seventh.

The North Platte track and field teams saw their seasons come to a close as neither team was able to qualify anyone for the sectional meet. Both teams finished last with one point apiece.
