Local tennis programs shine at Platte County Invitational

Platte County welcomed eight boys tennis teams for its annual Platte County Invitational on March 25, but they didn’t have to look far to find the top performers at the tournament.

The inter-county trio of Park Hill, Park Hill South and Platte County finished as the top three teams at the tournament. It was Park Hill’s first title at the tournament since 2022, snapping St. Joseph Central’s three-year streak.

Park Hill’s Carter Lovitt won the No. 1 singles tournament and partnered with Cody Phan to finish runner-up in No. 1 doubles.

The Trojans were the strongest singles team in the field, where they collected 14 of the team’s total of 20 wins. They proved to be the class of the competition with all six Trojans earning top-three finishes.

No. 2-seeded Carter Lovitt of Park Hill was the overall singles champion, opening the day with a 6-1 win against Platte County and a 6-3 win against St. Pius X. In the championship match, Lovitt overcame top-seeded Henry Jacobs with a 7-5 decision.

Park Hill freshman Alex Kalis won his singles and doubles division in his first varsity tournament.

Perhaps the most surprising result of the entire day came from Park Hill freshman Alex Kalis, who won the No. 2 singles bracket as the No. 7 seed. Kalis began his morning with a stunning 6-1 upset win over No. 2-seeded Kearney before shutting out No. 6 Willard 6-0. In the championship match, Kalis took out No. 5-seeded Central with a 6-4 score.

Park Hill freshman Lane Marshall and senior Bond Pasley also advanced to their respective championship matches. No. 3-seeded Marshall finished runner-up in No. 3 singles after falling to No. 5-seeded Central 6-4, and No. 2-seeded Pasley finished runner-up in No. 5 singles after losing out to No. 5-seeded Platte County 6-3 in the championship match.

The Trojans’ singles dominance was rounded out by third-place finishes from senior Cody Phan in No. 4 singles and junior Will Rouse in No. 6 singles.

In doubles, Park Hill was led by the No. 2 partnership of freshmen Kalis and Marshall at the No. 6 seed. Kalis/Marshall defeated No. 3 Liberty North 4-0 and No. 7 Central 5-3 before topping No. 5 Platte County in the championship 6-1.

The Trojans also had doubles teams finish as runner-up as No. 1 doubles, Lovitt and Phan advanced past Willard and St. Pius X before falling to Central in the championship. In No. 3 doubles, Pasley and Rouse finished third after making it to the third-place match, where they edged out Central 5-4(7-5).

Park Hill South finished second in the final standings with a 12-point tally from singles, adding six more wins in doubles.

Park Hill South sophomore Sam Patel won the No. 6 singles tournament.

The Panthers’ top performers came towards the bottom of the singles lineup, where senior Cole Tenbrink and sophomore Sam Patel won titles. Henry Jacobs also added valuable wins at No. 1 singles as the runner-up while Roberto Shepherd and Graham Albani won their third-place matches.

Park Hill South senior Cole Tenbrink won the No. 4 singles title.

Top-seeded Tenbrink won his title at No. 4 singles, opening the morning with a 6-2 triumph over Central and a 6-2 win against Park Hill. The championship match was Tenbrink’s most decisive result of the day as he cruised past St. Pius X with a 6-1 verdict.

Patel’s title came as the 6-seed at No. 6 singles, edging out No. 3-seeded Platte County 6-4 in the opener. He followed up with 6-1 victories over No. 2-seeded Park Hill and bottom-seeded Willard to claim the championship.

In doubles, the Panthers’ top performance came from Heny VanAsselt and Patel, who teamed up to finish with a silver medal in No. 3 doubles. The Jacobs and Tenbrink duo helped them earn a bronze medal in No. 1 doubles.

South also scored critical points on the consolation side of the brackets, as their No. 5 singles and No. 2 doubles both took fifth place after winning on the backside.

Platte County finished third of the eight teams at the tournament, coming a single win shy of Park Hill South’s 18-win tally. The Pirates’ top performer was junior Jacoby Keith, who went unbeaten all day after clinching titles in both singles and doubles.

Platte County junior Jacoby Keith helped the Pirates to a third-place finish as a team, winning his No. 5 singles tournament.

Keith opened his No. 5 singles campaign as the No. 4 seed with a 6-4 win against St. Pius X and a 6-1 win against top-seeded Willard. In the championship match, he defeated No. 2-seeded Park Hill 6-3.

The Pirates’ No. 3 doubles title came with Keith playing alongside senior Gabe Miller as the No. 7 seed. After shutting out No. 2 Kearney 4-0, Keith and Miller took out No. 6 Central 4-2 before clinching the title with a 6-1 triumph over No. 4 Park Hill South.

Platte County came close to another title at No. 2 doubles, but Owen Behne and Wyatt Beeson couldn’t overcome Park Hill in the championship. The rest of the Pirates battled through the consolation rounds, with Behne, Beeson and Miller each taking fifth in their respective brackets.
