The City of Platte City plans to hold a special work session this week to discuss Flock cameras in the city.
The board of aldermen work session is scheduled for 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 9 at city hall.
The meeting packet includes a staff report from City Administrator Bryan Richison, addressing the push back the city has faced from citizens opposed to the Flock license plate reading cameras.
“Given the recent communication from citizens opposed to the Flock LPR cameras, I am seeking clarification from the board on whether or not the city staff should plan on renewing our contract for the planned 24 month renewal term when it expires in April 2027,” Richison wrote in the report. “While I cannot speak for the citizens who have voiced their opposition to the cameras, I believe they would also like the board to address the future of the Flock cameras now instead of in April 2027.”
While city staff recommends the board move forward with renewal of its contract with Flock for three license plate readers for two years, citizens have banded together on social media to question the use of the license plate reading cameras. A petition on Change.org asking the city to end all Flock contracts immediately has garnered more than 250 signatures.
“As residents, we have come together with different concerns, questions and perspectives about Flock,” the petition states. “We all agree that we oppose the use of Flock in our community. We have put in the research, time, and energy for months and want our voices heard.”
