Platte County tabs new head football coach

The next head football coach of Platte County High School will be Derek Yost, the school announced on March 3.

Yost steps into his first head coaching job at the high school level of his career, remaining with a program he has spent a decade with. His previous duties have included coaching roles with defense and special teams.

Platte County enters a program overhaul with a new leader next season following the departure of longtime head coach Bill Utz. The Pirates will also seek replacements for offensive coordinator Jeff Humburg and defensive coordinator Eric Mitchell, both of whom announced their retirements at the conclusion of last season.

Yost has been a member of the Platte County football program that has won back-to-back Class 5 state championships and 28 consecutive games. The immediate future is daunting, with new personnel taking over three critical coaching roles and graduating a large senior class.

The Pirates will look to a new quarterback next fall, who will become the successor to Rocco Marriott, the program’s first-ever Simone Award winner. The Pirates will also be charged with replacing each skill position, which includes Braiden Stevens, the program’s first-ever Otis Taylor winner for best receiver.

Yost graduated from Savannah High School in 2010 and earned a degree in English Education from Missouri State University in 2015. He also earned his Master of Education in Educational Leadership from William Woods University in 2018 and an Education Specialist degree in educational leadership in 2024 from William Woods.
