Commission to consider changes to senior tax relief program

Presiding Commissioner Scott Fricker hosted an informational public forum last week on property taxes.

The forum was held Wednesday, Dec. 3 at the Parkville American Legion hall, and was also live streamed on Facebook. At the forum, Fricker covered how to read a tax bill and who the different taxing entities in the county are, why tax bills went up this year, and how the senior property tax credit works, as well as how to protest taxes.

The senior tax credit was part of the discussion, with Fricker suggesting modifications to the program. Those modifications will be discussed this coming Monday.

Fricker released a statement on Tuesday, Dec. 9 announcing that the full commission will consider two orders at the Monday, Dec. 15 administrative session.

According to the release, these orders would do the following:

  • Increases in bonded indebtedness will no longer be excluded from the program.

  • All property taxes paid on increased bonded indebtedness in 2025 by seniors approved for the program will be credited back to those taxpayers in future years.

  • Annual renewals will no longer be required beginning in 2026.

Those that would like to voice their support or opposition to these changes should attend the Commission session at 10 a.m. Monday at the Platte County Administrative Building, 415 3rd St in Platte City.
