Blue Jays soar past .500 in KCI

West Platte senior Cohen Kite helped the Blue Jays take down Plattsburg for the first time since 2021 with a 12-2 victory on April 11.

WESTON – Following a shutout KCI Conference loss, the West Platte baseball team (9-4) moved over .500 in conference play by beating Plattsburg (8-11) on April 11.

West Platte came into the day having lost the last three meetings with Plattsburg but ended the 1,078-day drought. The first win in the series since 2021 ended with a score of 12-2.

The Tigers struck first with two runs in the top of the first inning, failing to put another run on the board the rest of the way. Cuin Vincent and Gunner Smith had back-to-back RBI doubles for the Blue Jays in the bottom of the third inning to tie the game.

The Blue Jays took the lead later that inning and never looked back. Jhett Chandler reached on an error, which sent Smith across home plate, and Cohen Kite had a sacrifice fly RBI.

Next up for West Platte was a three-game outing in the Walk Off Wood Bat Tournament as it came up short in its first game, falling 2-1 to Braymer (8-4) on April 12. Smith doubled in the first at-bat in the game and scored when Jaxon Turner grounded out and the Bobcats put two runs on the board in the bottom of the third inning.

Smith added another hit, ending the game with two of the Blue Jays’ three hits with Turner having the other. Turner spent five innings on the mound, striking out eight batters and Matthew Cook struck out three batters in the seventh inning.

West Platte bounced back with a big 16-0 win over King City (4-8) on April 13. King City struggled early, walking the first five batters of the game – then walking two more and having an error later in the first inning – and West Platte took a quick 5-0 lead.

The Blue Jays only had seven hits, yet erupted for 16 runs. Blaze Masoner pitched for three innings and only allowed one hit and Alex Allison had two strikeouts in one inning.

West Platte ended the tournament with a 4-0 win over East Atchison (6-6) led by two hits and one RBI by Turner and Masoner. Kane Cogan went 1-for-3 and Cook struck out 10 batters.
