Farmers markets sell more than veggies

July 2, 2025 Jeanette Browning Faubion

Farmers markets in Parkville, pictured, and Platte City are providing fresh produce and a sense of community to Platte County.

Two Platte County farmers markets are offering more than just farm-fresh fruit and veggies at their stands this summer.

In Parkville, the farmers market has been a community staple for decades, with the loss of its permanent structure to two vehicle collisions in 2022 forcing its relocation to another area of the city parking lot at English Landing Park while their structure is being rebuilt. The market has persevered and is open both Saturdays starting at 7 a.m. and Wednesday afternoons from noon to 4 p.m.

“On Saturdays, we currently host around 22 vendors offering a wide variety of goods including vegetables, fruits, beef, chicken, eggs, pork, vegetable plants, herbs, flower starts, hanging baskets, flower bouquets, honey, pies, pastries, cookies, sourdough, microgreens, mushrooms, body products, jewelry, and more,” said Joyce McFarland, market manager. Wednesday markets are smaller, with about 10 vendors offering similar products to Saturday.

The Parkville market is expected to move into its new permanent shelter later this month.

“We’re very excited about the progress on the new permanent market shelter,” McFarland said. “Having a permanent structure will make setup and teardown much easier, and will offer much better protection from the elements for both vendors and customers. The new layout will also improve the flow of the market, making it an even more inviting place for folks to shop, relax, enjoy live music, lemonade, local food, and connect as a community.”

It’s that community that keeps the market going, she said.

“As for what’s most appreciated by the community – it’s definitely our amazing vendors and their locally grown produce and handmade goods,” McFarland said. “The support from the community has been incredible, and we’re so grateful for the continued enthusiasm and loyalty.”

The Platte City Farmers Market is also open and ready for business on Saturday mornings at 7 a.m. from May through September.

“We’re currently sitting at around 10 vendors in our farmer’s market, offering a great variety of goods including flowers, honey, jams, baked goods, sourdough bread, fresh produce, meats, car necessities, and epoxy crafts,” said organizer Laura Lowry. “The farmer’s market has been such a wonderful addition to our community. It gives residents a chance to support local growers in a convenient, safe space, purchase high-quality items each week, and enjoy a fun outing with the whole family.”

The Platte City market has been an integral part in the latest efforts to revitalize downtown Platte City.

“We’ve been incredibly grateful for the support we’ve received from the community,” Lowry said. “Between our weekly farmer’s market, monthly craft market, and monthly car show, we’ve seen a noticeable increase in foot traffic and overall engagement. Things are going really well, and we’re excited to keep growing!”

The Platte City market offers variety on Saturday mornings.
