Ground broken on Riverside stadium

The Riverside-based KC Current professional women's soccer team is constructing a new stadium and performance center in Riverside, a companion project to its main stadium just south of the Missouri River.

Ground was broken June 17 on the $16.8 million project, which was approved by the Riverside Board of Aldermen earlier this month. Construction is expected to begin next month.

The complex is located at 5000 Canal Street and will feature a 2,000 seat stadium with a 17,000 square foot performance space for training. The new construction is adjacent to the Current's training complex, which is approximately the same size as the new facility.

The new structures will be built in the same style as the current facility, and in a similar color palate. This is phase three of the Current's planned development of the area.

“This is a good problem to have,” said Mayor Kathy Rose. “They have 70 employees down there and I don't think they ever expected to have that many employees. The extra space will really be helpful for all of them. It's amazing how things that happen in Horizons – the businesses do so well. It's just good juju down there.”
