Platte County Parks celebrated the grand opening of the new Castle Playground at Michael Gunn Park at Platte Meadows last week with a medieval-themed ribbon cutting.
This was no ordinary ribbon-cutting. Members of the Canterbury Renaissance Festival (the beloved Kansas City Renaissance Festival troupe) will be on site in character, bringing a touch of medieval magic to the celebration with Renaissance-themed entertainment. Attendees can explore the impressive new castle-themed playground — complete with towers, climbing features, swings, and more — designed as a natural-themed adventure fit for kings, queens, and aspiring knights.
The Castle Playground is the centerpiece of Phase II improvements at the 110-acre Michael Gunn Park at Platte Meadows. Platte County acquired the natural area in 2002, with the first phase (including a 1-mile limestone multi-purpose loop trail) opening to the public in April 2022. Phase II adds the new playground equipment, additional parking, and a shelterhouse facility, further transforming the park into a premier destination for outdoor recreation in southern Platte County. A butterfly garden developed in partnership with the local Rotary Club is also part of the enhancements.
Michael Gunn Park at Platte Meadows features rolling hills, open meadows, and scenic trails, making it an ideal location for family outings, nature walks, and community gatherings. The new Castle Playground adds a play-focused element while preserving the park’s natural character.
