New coach, same winning goals for North Platte softball

After several years of tribulation, North Platte’s softball team has rediscovered its winning tradition over recent years with three consecutive 20-win seasons.

Now, the Panthers are looking to continue that tradition but under new leadership with first-year head coach Mackenze Hoefling leading the charge.

Hoefling hopes to end the Panthers’ decade-long drought without winning a district championship, but more importantly, she will focus on developing a culture that fosters long-term success.

“As a first-year head coach, my biggest expectations are to build a strong, competitive culture and help each player grow both on and off the field,” Hoefling said.

The Panthers will have some returning firepower, including 2024 all-region selections Kate Wolf and Graci Williams, but freshman Charlie Hinton could also impress inside the pitching circle.

“We’ve got some outstanding senior leadership and some exciting young talent, and I think that mix will make this a special season,” Hoefling said. “Whether it’s a milestone win, a breakout performance, or simply a hard-fought game, I think we’re going to have a lot of moments to be proud of.”

North Platte expects to thrive defensively once again after giving up just 3.0 runs per game last year. Whether Wolf, Hinton, or anyone else is in the circle, the Panthers believe they have a quick infield and outfielders who cover a lot of ground to make it difficult to score.

Hoefling has appreciated the level of commitment her players have shown, both in their development as individuals and in strengthening team chemistry.

“I want to create an environment where the girls feel confident, support one another, and play with intensity every time they step on the diamond,” Hoefling said. “Wins are always great, but my main focus is on effort, teamwork, and laying the foundation for long-term success.”

The Panthers hope the new leadership and fresh talent are enough to overcome the district tournament curse and make a deep run into October.
