North Platte football feeling belief

The North Platte football team is looking for something new going into the 2025 season to invigorate a program that won just one regular season game last year after making it to the state championship the year prior.

North Platte head football coach Jared Quigley has turned to a veteran running back to transition to quarterback and has instilled a team theme for this year: believe. He likes how his team has responded.

“The players have fully embraced it after a productive summer,” Quigley said. “There’s a real sense of commitment and confidence heading into the season.”

Now into his fourth season as head coach at North Platte, Quigley is excited to see the progression of the senior class. He has loved their commitment and is excited to see what their final season has in store for them.

“Watching their growth and dedication over the years makes this season particularly meaningful,” Quigley said. “Their leadership and experience are definite strengths, and I’m eager to see how that translates on the field.”

Among the senior leaders is Dylan Armstrong, who is transitioning from being an all-state second team selection at running back to the starting quarterback. Armstrong, who ran for 1,283 yards with 12 touchdowns last year, takes the reins at quarterback following the graduation of Westin Snook.

The Panthers’ running game is in good shape with the return of Logan Manville and Gus French. They will also be well-protected with an offensive line anchored by all-state right tackle Cameron Wortham while Nolan Dehn, Chase Harper and Aspen Large serving as some additional experience and depth up front.

North Platte’s defense is led by the linebacker tandem of Grady Coons and Johnny McCracken. The duo combined for more than 160 tackles last year and bring a level of toughness and leadership into the defense. The Panthers also added junior transfer Ben Horsley from Platte County, bringing another versatile weapon at running back and free safety.

Some changes have also been made to the coaching staff following the retirement of longtime offensive coordinator Jim Brockhoff. Quigley will operate as offensive coordinator while former Reed Springs coach Matthew Kothe has joined the Panthers’ staff as defensive coordinator, bringing a refreshed vision to the team.

North Platte opens the season with a trip to Butler on Aug. 29 before hosting Milan on Sept. 5.
