Park Hill South storms past Grandview

The Park Hill South football team had an offensive explosion on Friday, Aug. 29, that the program had not seen in nearly four years.

For the first time since October 2021, Park Hill South scored 51 points as they cruised to a 51-6 road victory against Grandview. The Panthers amassed 397 yards of total offense, 307 of which came in the passing game.

The Panthers cashed in on three first-quarter drives down the field, ending their first drive with a 40-yard field goal from senior kicker Noah Stephens. The next two scoring drives were finished off by junior quarterback Tyler Briggs finding a receiver for a touchdown.

Briggs finished the night with five passing touchdowns and 262 passing yards, completing 14 of 16 passes. Stephens was trustworthy, knocking in his only field goal attempt and converting six of seven point-after tries.

The Panthers turned a 16-0 first-quarter lead to a 37-0 lead in the second quarter after Magnus Hoenshell and Tyre Flowers, twice, put up three more touchdown scores on receptions from Briggs. Grandview finally struck just before halftime with an 81-yard touchdown run, but the Panthers still carried a 37-6 lead into halftime.

Park Hill South closed out the contest in the second half as its defense bounced back after giving up a big play at the end of the second quarter. Flowers caught his third touchdown of the evening from Briggs on a 23-yard connection in the third quarter before sophomore quarterback Kyle Rohlfing found Bennett Terwilleger for an 11-yard touchdown pass.

Defensively, the Panthers were led by Micah Forrest’s two sacks, seven tackles and a forced fumble recovered by Max Shepherd. Park Hill South had about twice as much possession time as Grandview.

The Panthers will face Blue Springs South for a Week 2 matchup in Blue Springs.
