Two FLOCK Safety cameras have been placed at the intersection of Branch Street and Running Horse Road in Platte City, allowing Platte City police to capture license plates of vehicles traveling through the intersection.
According to the FLOCK “transparency portal,” the camera systems will detect license plates and vehicles but will not employ facial recognition to capture drivers. Data is used for law enforcement purposes and is stored for 30 days. The data is shared with law enforcement officials across the state and is used in situations such as Amber Alerts, where the data may be used to locate suspect vehicles.
Installation of the camera systems was authorized last year but took some time to implement as the intersection falls under the jurisdiction of MoDOT and required their permission.
