Park Hill earned a spot in the Class 5 District 8 district championship match after a fifth-set revival carried them past Liberty North in the semifinal at North Kansas City High School on Oct. 25.
The No. 2-seeded Trojans won the first two sets, but were outmatched in the third and fourth sets with No. 3-seeded Liberty North playing to extend its season. Looking for a spark, Park Hill found it to take the fifth set, earning a spot in the district championship match for the first time since 2021.
The first set was just a preview of what would come throughout the rest of the afternoon, as neither team could grab a firm grip of the set. Liberty North eventually took a 20-17 advantage, but Park Hill stormed back. Both teams fought off set points, but a Liberty North hitting error ultimately gave Park Hill the opening set, 28-26.

Park Hill took firm control of set two, going on a 6-1 run to jump in front 9-4 and eventually 16-10. Liberty North did not go down quietly, coming back within a score before the Trojans escaped with a 25-23 win in the second set to take a 2-0 advantage into the third set.
Facing elimination, Liberty North rose to the occasion in the third set. The set started close before the Eagles slowly created some separation before extending their season another set by taking the third frame 25-15.
The shift in momentum continued into the fourth set as Liberty North ran out to an early 5-0 lead. Park Hill had no answer, quickly falling further behind before Liberty North served an ace to extend the series to a match-deciding fifth set.
Park Hill finally showed some life to begin the fifth set as they took a pair of short-lived single-point leads. Liberty North responded to edge in front 4-2, but then the Trojans rallied for a much-needed revival to save their season.
The Trojans went on a 4-0 run to retake a 7-4 lead. A Liberty North timeout got the Eagles within a point, but the Trojans remained composed as they extended their lead out to 13-7 before eventually clinching the match with a 15-12 fifth-set victory when a lengthy rally was finally slammed shut after Myer Cohara set Parker Kimball up for a kill, winning the match 3-2.
Park Hill previously defeated Oak Park in straight sets at the Trojan Colliseum on Oct. 23 in the district quarterfinals. The Trojans edged the first set 25-23, setting up less stressful 25-17 and 25-15 set wins.
The semifinal win against Liberty North put the Trojans’ win-loss record at 18-4 on the season, the first 18-win season since 2019. Park Hill had never won a postseason set against Liberty North, suffering straight-set defeats in the 2023 and 2022 district tournaments as well as in the 2021 state sectional matchup.
Park Hill’s first-ever postseason win against Liberty North gave the Trojans an opportunity to win districts for the first time in four years. Park Hill met No. 5-seeded Liberty in the district championship on Oct. 28 — the first postseason meeting between the two conference rivals since 2018.
