Trojans take second at Darren Floyd Memorial Tourney

TIFFFANY GREENS – Out of the 17 golf teams competing in the Darren Floyd Memorial Tournament at Tiffany Greens Golf Club, Park Hill and Park Hill South finished in third and fourth places ahead of 12th place Platte County on April 4.

Liberty North won the tournament with 299 strokes and Park Hill wasn’t too far behind with 312. Park Hill South ended with 320 and Platte County had 345.

The best individual from the three schools in the county was Park Hill’s Ethan Howell. He tied for fourth place with 74 strokes, four less than Park Hill South’s top finisher, Clayton Wichman.

Tied for 11th place with 78 strokes was Drew Hurley from Park Hill South and Alejandro Magana from Park Hill. Braden Hendee was the top golfer from Platte County, being in a 12th place tie with 79 strokes.

“The team had some ups and downs out on the course today, but not all of them were the good kind,” Platte County head golf coach Trevor Short said. “We’re still in the learning and development process of the players and it will take a little time to get them to the consistency level that it will take to move on to the postseason play.”

The Trojans were able to scrape away a third-place finish thanks to Gavin Schaag and Zach Cato both shooting an 80. Jon King ended with 89 strokes.

For Park Hill South, Hayden Lea missed out on medaling by two strokes when he shot an 82, which was one less than Matthew Parker. Keegan Feder ended with 86 strokes.

Platte County had a bit of a gap from its number one and number two finisher as Josh Knickman tied for 31st place with 84 strokes. Josh Gentilia was four strokes and 18 places behind Knickman.

“We saw lots of quality shots; it’s just putting more of those quality shots back-to-back. We’re still in the process of getting players some more playing time so we can put the best five players out on the course,” Short said.

The Pirates’ final two finishers ended in a tie for 70th place and outright in 74th place. Ben Gillilan ended with 94 strokes and Braydon Renno ended with 95 strokes.
