Platte County Commissioners announced last week their plan to present a “homestead property tax credit” program at a meeting held today (Wednesday, Jan. 21).
According to a press release, the commission will consider an order that, if passed, would authorize it to put before the voters a property tax relief ballot measure authorized by Missouri statute 137.1055. If approved by the voters, the county will implement a Homestead Property Tax Credit Program for eligible homeowners that limits annual property tax increases on their primary residences to no more than 5% annually.
This initiative builds on the commission’s Senior Tax Credit program, which was passed in 2024 and implemented last year.
According to Presiding Commissioner Scott Fricker, “This proposed order reflects our ongoing commitment to responsible property tax reform in an effort to ease the burden of rapidly increasing and unpredictable property taxes for Platte County homeowners.”
The proposed ballot language for the credit program reads as follows: “Shall the County of Platte grant a homestead property tax credit pursuant to Section 137.1055 of the Revised Statutes of Missouri to eligible taxpayers residing in such county in an amount equal to the taxpayer’s eligible credit amount?”
If passed by voters, Platte County shall apply such credit when calculating the eligible taxpayer’s property tax liability for the tax year. The amount of the credit shall be noted on the statement of tax due sent to the eligible taxpayer by the county collector.
Increases to property value will be applied if there is an addition to the home in question, or if the property is annexed into another taxing jurisdiction.
