A petition on Change.org has garnered almost 500 signatures, calling on the City of Platte City to add a center turning lane in its plan to rebuild Highway 92 into a four-lane highway.
Valerie Partch, owner of Jackson Animal Clinic, started the petition, noting the clinic is only veterinary service in Platte City and the sole provider of large animal veterinary services in Platte County.
“The proposed design for the new four-lane highway along Hwy. 92 threatens to disrupt the vital access to these crucial services that local residents rely upon,” the petition states. “This disruption isn’t just an inconvenience; it poses a significant risk to the livelihood of my business and those of other long-standing small businesses in the community.
“Currently, the design includes a median curb, which will considerably limit the accessibility and convenience for our clients. This planned median not only disrupts the easy flow of traffic but also hinders the economic vibrancy of our area. The value of impacted real estate is predicted to decline, and the growth and success of established small businesses will be stifled. It is crucial to consider the broader implications of such a design on the local economy and community well-being.”
Jackson Animal Clinic isn’t alone, according to the petition. Several other businesses operating along Hwy. 92 will face similar challenges. This includes Willow Woods Learning Center, Autism Support Now, Goodman’s Auto Repair, Commercial Concrete Solutions, and Platte City Self Storage.
“These businesses have served the community for many years, contributing significantly to the local economy and providing indispensable services,” the petition states. “A restrictive access design will curb customer flow, affect revenue generation, and may eventually lead to closures.”
Instead of a median curb, the petitioners propose the implementation of a center turn lane.
“This alternative will maintain full access to businesses and homes, ensuring that all entities can continue to thrive,” the petition states. “With plans already including improved grading, better line of sight, and reduced speed limits, a center turn lane is a safe and more efficient improvement. It provides the opportunity for vehicles to turn left at key points without obstructing ongoing traffic, thus preserving the accessibility for our clients and community residents. During periods of high traffic volume, drivers will have the flexibility to use the roundabouts if using the center lane is challenging.”
