Parkville police tase woman after confrontation at auto parts store

A call about a fraudulent check led to a physical altercation after a woman first assaulted and then tried to run from a Parkville Police Department officer last week. Amber Shafer

The incident occurred at about 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 30 at the Carquest Auto Parts Store, located at 8720 NW 63rd St. The manager contacted police after a white female allegedly tried to pass a check from a closed account.

Once on the scene, the officer approached a gold Lexus in the parking lot to speak with the passenger, later identified as 28-year-old Amber Shafer of Kansas City, Kan. She agreed to go back into the store to discuss the check she had just written, which came from a closed account.

A computer check revealed an active warrant for Shafer for theft of a $500 bond. She attempted to walk past the officer toward the front door, but he held up his left hand and blocked her path.

According to a probable cause statement, the officer noticed Shafer’s demeanor change, staring at the officer and tensing up. He then asked her to put her hands behind her back, but she instead tried to pull away and forced her shoulder into the officer’s chest.

Shafer then allegedly ran for the door, but the officer grabbed her hoodie in an attempt to stop her and asked her to stop resisting. She dragged the officer toward the door.

Once near the door, she turned to face the officer and allegedly shouted that she was not going to jail. The officer radioed for backup and warned Shafer that if she did not comply that he would use a Taser on her.

“Tase me,” she allegedly told the officer while opening the door.

The officer then deployed the Taser striking the suspect in the back. She fell to the ground but managed to remove one of the barbs and stand back up.

In the ensuing struggle, the officer suffered a 4-inch cut to his arm, and Shafer managed to run toward the Lexus with the officer in pursuit. He took her to the ground and held her there until backup arrived. Both the officer and Shafer were treated at the scene, and she was sent to a nearby hospital to have the other Taser barb removed from her back after it twisted and bent in the struggle.

Shafer remains in custody at the Platte County Detention Center in lieu of a $2,500 cash-only bond charged with misdemeanors of assaulting a law enforcement officer and resisting arrest.
