Park Hill South junior Ryan Welty experienced a breakout campaign, helping the Panthers to a second place finish in the Missouri Class 5 playoffs.

The versatile forward averaged a team-high 15.5 points per game this season and earned a spot on the Missouri Basketball Coaches Association all-state team. The teams were released in March, but The Citizen delayed its story in anticipation of a media team, which was not issued this season.

Welty began receiving notice from Division I schools this season thanks to an intriguing inside-outside game. The 6-foot-7 forward scored 16 points in the Panthers’ state semifinal upset of Chaminade. Park Hill South lost 71-57 to Blue Springs South in the title game, the first appearance for the Panthers since 2000 (Class 3). They set a school record for wins in a season and finished (26-4).

Welty also averaged 6.7 rebounds per game and shot 47 percent on 3-pointers (70 made shots).

Park Hill senior Landry Shamet joined Welty on the list, making his second straight appearance on the Class 5 all-state team. The senior and Wichita State signee averaged 18.3 points per game in his senior campaign and became the fifth member of Park Hill’s 1,000-point club in January.

The defending district champion, Park Hill finished 21-6 with three losses to Welty and Park Hill South, including a defeat in the Class 5 District 16 title game.

Shamet scored 24 points to go with eight rebounds in four assists in the final loss. The 6-foot-4 point guard, named the the Suburban Conference Red Division’s player of the year this season, averaged 6.4 rebounds, 3.1 assists, 1.4 steals and 1.4 blocks per game, while shooting 52 percent from the field (39 percent on 3s).

Park Hill’s playoff appearance in 2014 with Shamet averaging 20.1 points per game marked the first for the Trojans in two decades.

North Platte’s Chelsi Sams also earned her second selection to the MBCA all-state team, making the Class 2 list again. The senior forward recently signed to play basketball at Southwestern Community College in Creston, Iowa after a career that included more than 1,000 points.

North Platte went to the playoffs in each of her first three years before a loss to Hamilton in this year’s Class 2 District 16 championship game ended the Panthers’ season at 27-2. They went 7-0 in KCI Conference play, winning a second straight league title.
