Toddler drowns in pond at family member's home

The boy later died at an area hospital with drowning the reported cause of death. NEW MARKET, Mo. — A 3-year-old boy drowned in a pond at a family member’s home Monday, Nov. 23.

Emergency crews were called into swift action shortly after 11:30 a.m. after a report of a 3-year-old who had fallen into the water of a landscaping pond at a residence on County Road H. The boy was outside riding a tricycle and apparently rode into the pond while his grandfather briefly stepped inside, according to a spokesman with the Platte County Sheriff’s Office. The child was only out of sight for a few minutes.

The home is located just off of Highway 371, south of New Market.

Crews administered CPR in attempt to revive the boy before he was rushed to Mosaic Life Care in St. Joseph, Mo. by ambulance. He later died at the hospital.

The Platte County Sheriff’s investigative unit responded to the scene, and a full investigation is underway. However, a news release said that the drowning appears to be an accident, and foul play is not suspected. The investigation will determine if any crime occurred that led to the incident.

The boy’s death was confirmed Monday evening, and the name was being withheld to allow the family to make notifications.
