A haunting good time in Parkville

Ghosts and ghouls will invade Parkville this weekend for the annual Ghost Stories Night at the Parkville Nature Sanctuary.

The free event will begin at 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25 with the Little Goblins Hour, followed by s’mores and spooky campfire music at 6 p.m. Ghost stories at the cabin will run from 6:30-9 p.m. and the haunted trail will begin at 7 p.m.

“Last year, we welcomed several thousand guests to the Parkville Nature Sanctuary for our annual Ghost Stories event,” said David Mullen, Parkville’s Parks and Recreation program manager. “We anticipate similar numbers this year.”

While the traditional ghost stories thrill the crowds at the cabin, the Little Theatre of Weston will bring some extra chill to the night.

Mullen said the partnership with the Little Theatre has been an exceptional one.

“They bring a level of quality and attention to detail that is truly unmatched,” he said. “The haunted trail, which they oversee, is meticulously crafted with the experience of our guests in mind. Everything from costumes, make-up, positioning, effects and atmosphere are all top notch. We can’t recommend them enough!”

While most activities, from s’mores to food trucks and live music from the Shortleaf Band and Bentley Guitar are suitable for all ages, Mullen warns that the haunted trail is not for everyone.

“The scary trail is frightening and not suitable for those who scare easily,” Mullen said. “If you are looking for a tamer experience, our Little Goblins Hour takes place from 5-6 p.m. where guests can create Halloween themed arts and crafts and play games.”

The fun isn’t just limited to Saturday night, as a special event will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 23 at the McKeon Stage in English Landing Park. Attendees will carve pumpkins to line the not-so-spooky pumpkin trail leading the way into the woods.

“Pumpkin carving is an excellent family-friendly event where adults and children alike can create their Jack O’lantern masterpiece in a fun environment,” Mullen said.

Hundreds of pumpkins will be provided for carving, but carvers are encouraged to bring their own tools. The evening in the park includes live music from the Kansas City Bearfighters and Friends of Parkville Animal Shelter will be on site to promote pet adoptions.
