Augustyn’s big day sends South home with a loss

Park Hill sophomore Bryson Augustyn meets Nick Huckbey at home plate after his three-run homer in the first inning of the Trojans’ 4-0 win over Park Hill South on April 9.

KANSAS CITY – Bryson Augustyn was the MVP when he helped lift the Park Hill baseball team (7-13) past rival Park Hill South (9-8) 4-0 on April 9.

The Park Hill sophomore was pivotal on both sides, earning the win as a pitcher and being responsible for three of the four runs as a batter. Augustyn was on the mound all night, striking out 10 Panthers and only allowing two hits – singles by Michael Good and Trenton Parker.

Augustyn had a three-run home run in his first at-bat of the night, which was in the first inning. Nicholas Huckabey singled and Caelin Bradford was walked to put two runners on before he stepped up to the plate and sailed a hit over the left field fence.

Bradford singled in the second inning to push Logan Conley across home plate and make the score 4-0. Park Hill South junior Hagen McMahon started on the mound and Max Killoren relieved him in the third inning as they both struck out three batters each.

The Panthers were 2-1 on the road before the 4-0 loss, which ended up being the first of three road losses. Park Hill South went on to lose 8-3 to Kearney (13-6) on April 10 and came up short 3-1 to Liberty North (14-7) on April 17.

The Panthers had only lost more than one game in a row one time this season before dropping three straight. Since starting off 6-3, Park Hill South has posted a 3-5 record.

Park Hill earned bragging rights over its rival but followed that up with back-to-back defeats. The Trojans were beat 13-1 by Lee’s Summit West (13-6) on April 10.

Park Hill was in a barn burner with Smithville (7-9) on April 11, having no scores through five innings. The Warriors put one on the board in the bottom of the sixth inning and the Trojans were unable to extend the game on a night where both teams had three hits.

Park Hill was able to avoid a three-game losing skid with a 9-1 victory over Lee’s Summit (12-6) on April 12. The Trojans had eight hits and scored the first six runs behind a pair of hits by Bradford and Aiden Allen.

Next up for Park Hill is a trip to St. Joseph for the Benton Tournament. Park Hill South will head to Liberty North on April 17.
