Hoenshell earn all-state honors in first trip to Mizzou

Magnus Hoenshell became the first Park Hill South boy to earn a state medal since 2021 with a sixth-place finish in the 132-weight class on Feb. 24.

COLUMBIA – Having four wrestlers make the trek to Mizzou Arena for state wrestling, Park Hill South only had one athlete who made it past the first day and earned all-state honors on Feb. 24.

Magnus Hoenshell became the first Park Hill South boy to earn a state medal since Lucas Oitker in 2022. The 132-pounder claimed sixth place, going 3-3 at state and ended 35-17 on the winter.

Hoenshell lost in the quarterfinals, winning his next two matches to reach the consolation semifinals. From that point on, the Panther lost on a 3-1 decision to Lee’s Summit’s Cooper Nally and a 5-1 decision to Ozark’s Caden Harrington.

Landen McDowell went 2-2 at state as a 138-pounder. He alternated wins and losses at the tournament, earning four points and wrapping up the year with 35 wins and seven losses.

After graduating 4-time all-stater Maddie Kubicki, the Lady Panthers failed to have a state medalist this go-round. Lucia Henriquez and Julia Smith both competed in the Class 2 State Tournament in the 140-weight class and 145-weight class, respectively.

Henriquez was pinned by Ericka Washom from Joplin in her first match and lost on a 7-2 decision against Julian Smith from Ritenour in her last match. Henriquez earned a state victory when she pinned Brooke Dollard from Troy Buchanan in 2:21.

Smith ended the season with a record of 28-10, including a 1-2 record at state. The Park Hill South wrestler pinned Maya Duncan (Waynesville) in the first match before losing by fall against Madeline Haynes (Rockwood Summit) and Addisyn Hunt (Smith-Cotton).
