Kearney rallies to clip Platte County in Suburban Blue showdown

In a showdown of perennial powers, Kearney picked up a 46-27 victory against Platte County on Tuesday, Jan. 8 at Kearney High School.

A back and forth battle —like the case in most years for supremacy in the Suburban Conference Blue Division — turned in favor of the Bulldogs when they won five of the final six matches.

The Bulldogs won four straight –— between 182 and 285 — before a win at 113 capped off the rally.

Prior to the win streak, the Pirates held a 21-19 advantage.

Once down 13-0 after three matches, Platte County got three straight wins to take the lead. Nick Filger (138 pounds) pinned Hunter Jardin and Gabe Davis got a forfeit win at 145. Nolan Saale (152) picked up a 6-5 decision against Caden Green.

The scoreboard kept busy as Kearney’s Coby Aebersold pinned Blaine Kuehn to give the Bulldogs a 19-15 advantage.

Jaydon Walls got the lead back for Platte County when he pinned Donovan Luft in 1 minute, 42 seconds in the 170-pound match.

Down by two, Chopper Mordecai got a win for Kearney — the first of four in a row — at 182 to give Kearney the lead for good.

Lawson 54, Mid-Buchanan 28

Mid-Buchanan 51, South Harrison 18

In a KCI Conference matchup on Thursday, Jan. 10, the Dragons lost to the Cardinals in Faucett, Mo.

Only one North Platte wrestler factored into a decision for Mid-Buchanan. Aaron Thomas (160) lost by a pin against Tyler Ross in 1:21.

In the other dual, Thomas got a forfeit win for Mid-Buchanan.

Liberty North 62, Park Hill South 18

At one point, the Panthers held a 12-11 lead in this Suburban Conference Red Division dual on Tuesday, Jan. 8 in Riverside, Mo.

After dropping the first two matches, Andre Anderson (152 vs. Michael Schwaim) and Max Rosario (160 vs. Vince Restivo) got pins to give the Panthers the temporary lead.

A win by Xavier Jackson — by disqualification by Ke’Shwan Turner at 195 — pulled Park Hill South within five, 23-18, but Liberty North won the next seven matches.

Albany Quad

West Platte lost all three matches held at the Albany Quad on Thursday, Jan. 10. 

The Bluejays lost to the host Warriors, 36-18. The wins for West Platte came from Julian Trelow, Lamar Henderson and Mason Taylor. The latter two won by forfeits, while Trelow pinned Trey Cooper in 58 seconds at the 160-pound class.

Maysville posted a 54-18 win against West Platte. Trelow, Henderson and Thomas Tharp got wins — all by forfeits. In the only match of the 14 wrestled, Trent Strong (182) pinned Taylor. 

Stanberry prevailed 48-21 against West Platte, who had four wins. Zack Esther (113) and Tharp won by forfeits. Trelow pinned Reuben Gage (160) in 3 minutes and Taylor own 4-1 against Mateo Messner.

Park Hill 78, Blue Springs South 6

The Trojans posted an emphatic win in a Suburban Conference Gold Division dual on Tuesday, Jan. 8 at Park Hill High School.

Park Hill won the first 10 matches — seven pins and three forfeits — to dominate the visiting Jaguars.

A win by Blue Springs South at 182 prevented a perfect 84-0 score for the No. 2-ranked team in Class 4 – according to MissouriWrestling.com.

Forfeit wins for Park Hill went to Justin Stock (170), Simon Tesafamarian (220), Logan Laster (220), Cael Keck (106) and Ryker Smith (113).

Josef Moreno (120), Ethen Miller (126), Trey Crawford (132), Grayston DiBlasi (138), Trey Safford (145), Tyson Moore (152), Phoenix Thomas (160) and Devin Winston (195) all won by pins. Moore, Thomas, Safford and Crawford all got falls in the first period.

Park Hill: The Trojans were on the road on Tuesday, Jan. 15 and the result were unavailable by press time. This upcoming weekend, Park Hill South will take part in the Winnetonka Tournament on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 18-19. On Tuesday, Jan. 22, the Trojans host Lee’s Summit West and Ray-Pec in a pair of Suburban Conference Gold Division duals.

Park Hill South: The Panthers have a pair of conference duals on the horizon, which started with a road trip to Independence to face Truman on Tuesday, Jan. 15. Results were unavailable by press time. On Tuesday, Jan. 22, Park Hill South goes to Lee’s Summit for a Suburban Conference Red Division clash. In between, the Panthers will join Park Hill at the Winnetonka Tournament.

Platte County: The Pirates hosted Grandview on Tuesday, Jan. 15 — results were unavailable by press time — before Class 4 Blue Springs visits on Wednesday, Jan. 16. Another dual is slated for Tuesday, Jan. 22 against Smithville in a Suburban Conference Blue Division showdown. The biggest upcoming event is the Platte County Invitational on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 18-19. The field coming up includes Carthage, Helias Catholic, Oak Grove, Smithville, Olathe (Kan.) North, St. James (Kan.) Academy, Leavenworth (Kan.), Kirksville, Rockwood Summit, Rolla and Warrensburg.
