Lady Blue Jays fall short in consolation championship at North Platte

DEARBORN – The North Platte Girls’ Invitational Basketball Tournament was a competitive one as West Platte (6-9) lost two of its three games and came up short in the consolation championship on Jan. 26.

The sole win of the tournament by West Platte came against Mound City (9-7) on Jan. 24. It was a 50-30 blowout win and the Lady Blue Jays were up 30-10 at the break.

Avery Holmes shot 5-of-10 from behind the arc, giving her 15 points to go with five steals. She nearly had half of the team’s 11 steals.

Mound City had 18 turnovers and West Platte scored 17 points from that, along with seven points in transition. Sam Baker ended with 11 points, which was the most she scored in the three games of the North Platte Invitational Tournament.

Catelyn Carlson made six of her 14 shots to give her 12 points, eight rebounds and two steals. Julia Pattison finished with 11 points, three rebounds, two assists and a steal.

In the consolation championship, West Platte matched up with Mid-Buchanan (9-8) for the third time this season and came up short once again. The Lady Blue Jays went scoreless in the first quarter but had a 15-point second quarter to turn a 9-0 deficit into a 17-15 deficit at the break.

The third quarter was also scoreless for West Platte and Mid-Buchanan added 12 points to its lead. The Lady Blue Jays outscored the Lady Dragons 13 to seven in the final eight minutes, falling short 36-28.

Pattison had a team-high eight points and Carlson finished with seven points. Along with those two, Holmes and Baker also made one 3-pointer as West Platte shot 4-of-10 from behind the arc.

The Lady Blue Jays are in the final stretch of the season, only having six regular season games left – four of which are on the road. West Platte’s next game will be at home against Gallatin, which is a makeup contest for the Lawson Tournament being cancelled, on Feb. 1.
