Man accused of snatching cell phones in Offer up Scam

A Kansas City man faces two felony counts after an alleged robbery in March of this year.

Jalen Clayton

Jalen Clayton, 18, faces a robbery in the first degree charge and an armed criminal action charge after he robbed two people of their cell phones after setting up an exchange on the Offer Up app on March 18.

Clayton was arrested on an unrelated charge on March 31 and admitted to detectives he was involved in a robbery after setting up a meeting on the Offer Up app. He said he used a BB gun provided by his cousin who later turned in the stolen phone to an eco ATM machine at the Gladstone Walmart.

The victims both identified Clayton from a photo lineup and provided serial number of a phone recovered from the machine.

The victim described the situation differently, stating that Clayton entered the back seat of the vehicle they were driving and demanded their phones and money. The victim said Clayton pulled out a magazine from the gun and displayed the bullets inside saying, “I’m serious.”
