North Platte’s boys track and field team has reached a new summit after winning the boys program’s first-ever KCI Conference championship on May 2 at Lathrop High School.
The Panthers made the most of their depth to score 149 points as a team, edging out West Platte (141.5 points) for the team title.
Senior Drake Keraus led the way with one of the most dominant individual showings of the meet. He swept the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 meters, winning all three distance races and accounting for a major share of North Platte’s points.
William Schaffart supported that effort with runner-up finishes in both the 800 and 3,200, along with a third-place finish in the 1,600.
North Platte sophomore Hudson Yarc anchored the Panthers’ KCI title in the 4x100 relay on May 2.
North Platte’s relay teams also added critical points. The Panthers won the 4x100 relay in 43.79 seconds behind Dylan Armstrong, Cooper Cummings, Isaac Wright and Hudson Yarc. They followed that with another victory in the 4x400 relay, where Keraus, Jase Smith, Austin Spencer and Wright finished in 3:35.43.
Additional sprint scoring came from Cummings, who placed second in both the 100 and 200 meters, and Wright, who took third in the 400 and fourth in the 200. Armstrong added a fifth-place finish in the 100, while Spencer placed fifth in the 400.
In the hurdles, Galen Christiansen contributed with fourth-place finishes in both the 110 and 300 hurdles. Jaxsen Hubbard added depth in the same events, finishing eighth in the 110 hurdles and 10th in the 300 hurdles.
Cameron Wortham scored key points in the discus by winning with a school record throw of 47.84 meters. James Speight added a 10th-place finish in the same event and placed 12th in the shot put.
The Panthers’ ability to score across numerous areas ultimately separated them from the field.
West Platte, meanwhile, leaned on standout senior Alex Kinslow, who delivered one of the top individual performances of the meet. Kinslow won the 100 meters in 11.16 seconds, the 200 in 22.67 and added victories in both hurdle events, taking the 110 hurdles in 15.33 and the 300 hurdles in 40.18.
Kinslow’s four-event sweep anchored a strong showing in the sprints, helping the Blue Jays to a conference runner-up finish.
West Platte also saw Brady McMillan claim the 400-meter conference title in 50.89 seconds and place third in the 200. Blaze Masoner added a top-eight finish in the 100 and placed sixth in the long jump.
In distance events, Charles Trease finished second in both the 1,600 and 3,200, while Collin Frederick added fourth-place finishes in those same races. The Blue Jays’ 4x800 relay team of Noah Rees, Frederick, Trease and Miller captured the conference title in 8:25.29.
The West Platte girls also performed well, finishing runner-up with 129.5 points behind only Lawson (157 points).
West Platte demonstrated impressive depth, especially in middle and long-distance events and relays. Caroline Ransome was a major contributor, finishing second in the 1600 (5:40.18) and second in the 3200 (12:15.26).
Freshman Charlotte Gillis placed third in the 1600 and fifth in the 3200, while Megan Cline took third in the 3200 with a time of 12:40.84. In the 400, freshman Nora Meyerkorth finished third in 1:03.16 while Payton Reber added a fifth-place finish in the 800 (2:37.14).
West Platte’s relay teams were also among the top in the meet as the 4x400 (4:16.09) and 4x800 (11:07.58) finished runner-up. The Blue Jays’ 4x200 took third and the 4x100 came in fourth.
In the field, senior Addison Bailey won the triple jump with a leap of 10.39 meters and also placed third in the 300 hurdles.
North Platte’s distance crew was exceptional behind senior Chloe Heckman, who delivered a dominant double by winning the 1600m in 5:35.26 and the 3200m in 11:45.54. Her efforts also anchored a powerful North Platte presence in the longer races.
Sophomore Farrah Williams captured the 800m title with a solid 2:28.83, while the North Platte 4x400 relay team (Morgan Ball, Megan Schuster, Farrah Williams, Graci Williams) took gold in 4:11.29. The 4x100 relay squad also earned silver (51.15).
Schuster added a podium finish in the 100 with a personal best 12.87 for third place for the Panthers.
Next up for both programs is the Class 2 District 8 meet, slated for May 9 in Chillicothe.
