One dead in fatality crash on Hwy. 45

An 18-year-old Kansas City, Kan. resident died in a two-vehicle, head-on crash on Highway 45 last week. 

At approximately 4 p.m. Thursday, July 3, the Platte County Sheriff’s Office responded to a motor vehicle crash on Hwy. 45 just north of Kisker Road. The preliminary investigation of the crash indicates that a 2018 Kia Rio was traveling north on Hwy. 45 when it collided nearly head on with a 2024 BMW 230i that was traveling southbound on 45. 

The driver of the Kia Rio, an 18-year-old woman from Kansas City, Kan. has been identified as Emmelie Rodriguez. She died at the scene. The driver of the BMW 230i, a 79-year-old man from Topeka, Kan., and his passenger, a 69-year-old woman, both had serious but not life-threatening injuries and were transported to an area hospital for treatment.

The cause and circumstances leading up to the crash remains under investigation by the Platte County Sheriff’s Office Crash Team. Hwy. 45 remained closed for approximately four hours during the on-scene investigation.
