One killed in Riverside crash

On Wednesday, April 22 at approximately 9 a.m., the Riverside Police Department responded to a motor vehicle crash on NW Mattox Road just north of NW 43rd Street in Riverside.

At the request of the Riverside Police Department, the Platte County Sheriff’s Office assumed responsibility for the crash investigation at approximately 9:30 a.m. due to the severity of the injuries to one of the drivers and the involvement of a commercial motor vehicle.

The crash involved a 2024 Kawasaki motorcycle driven by Michael Wolcott, a 35-year-old male from Riverside, and a 2022 International Truck Tractor operated by Robert McCormick, a 33-year-old male resident of Lucas, Iowa.

The preliminary investigation indicates that Wolcott was driving southbound on Mattox Road at a high rate of speed when he attempted to pass the vehicle operated by McCormick who had begun to turn left into a local business.  Wolcott’s motorcycle collided with the brush guard of the truck, and Wolcott and the motorcycle continued southbound, leaving the roadway and colliding with a utility pole.

Wolcott was transported to an area hospital where he later passed away because of his injuries.  McCormick was not injured and was released at the scene.

The preliminary cause of the motor vehicle crash, including the full accident reconstruction remains under investigation by the Platte County Sheriff’s Office Crash Team.  It is believed that excess speed and improper passing were contributing factors to the motor vehicle crash.
