North Platte and West Platte will send large contingents to the Class 2 state track and field championships after standout performances at the Class 2 Sectional 4 meet on May 16 at Lafayette High School.
North Platte’s boys team turned in one of the top performances of the entire meet, finishing second in the team standings with 78 points, while West Platte followed in third at 59. On the girls side, West Platte placed third with 65 points and North Platte added a seventh-place finish with 42.
The Panthers were fueled by a balanced boys performance, led by senior Drake Keraus, who qualified for state in three events. He finished runner-up in the 800 meters in 2:00.43, took third in the 1600 in 4:41.86 and placed fourth in the 3200 in 10:53.57.
North Platte also captured a sectional championship in the 4x100 relay. Dylan Armstrong, Cooper Cummings, Isaac Wright and Hudson Yarc ran 43.37 seconds to edge Lone Jack for the title.
Cummings added an individual state berth by placing second in the 100-meter dash in 11.14. Wright contributed another qualifying performance in the 400 meters, taking fourth in a personal-best 50.91.
The Panthers’ 4x400 relay team of Keraus, Jase Smith, Austin Spencer and Wright placed third in 3:29.34 to advance.
North Platte’s girls were led by sophomore Farrah Williams, who delivered one of the strongest performances of the day. Williams won the sectional title in a close 800-meter race with a personal-best 2:18.53, holding off Lexington freshman Ellie Lichte down the stretch.
Williams also anchored two state-qualifying relays. Alongside Morgan Ball, Megan Schuster and Graci Williams, the Panthers placed fourth in the 4x100 relay in 50.54 before the same quartet returned to finish second in the 4x400 relay at 4:06.20.
North Platte added another girls state qualifier through Chloe Heckman, who placed fourth in the 3200 in 12:11.14.
West Platte’s boys squad also had a standout performance, qualifying three relays for the state meet.
Senior Alex Kinslow highlighted the Blue Jays’ day with a sectional championship in the 300-meter hurdles, winning in 39.84. Kinslow later teamed with Brady McMillan, Eric Beard and Samuel Miller to win the 4x400 district relay in 3:28.27.
McMillan also qualified individually in the 400 meters, placing third in a personal-best 50.54.
West Platte dominated the 3200-meter run, where sophomores Charles Trease and Collin Frederick finished second and third, respectively. Trease crossed in 10:30.15 while Frederick followed in 10:33.96.
The Blue Jays added another sectional title in the 4x800 relay as Noah Rees, Frederick, Trease and Miller combined for an 8:22.25 victory.
West Platte added another relay qualifier in the 4x100. Blaze Masoner, McMillan, Layn Kear and Kinslow placed fourth in 43.86 to grab the final state-qualifying spot as they edged out University Academy by .01.
On the girls side, West Platte’s versatility showed throughout the meet. Senior Addison Bailey qualified for state in three events, led by a runner-up finish in the 300-meter hurdles in a personal-best 47.80. Bailey also helped the Blue Jays qualify in both sprint relays and added a fourth-place finish in the triple jump.
West Platte’s 4x100 relay team of Nora Meyerkorth, Sophie Grier, Hana Hoover and Katherine Carletti placed third in 50.46, while Bailey, Grier, Meyerkorth and Carletti qualified in the 4x200 relay with a fourth-place finish in 1:47.68.
The Blue Jays also advanced in the 4x400 relay as Meyerkorth, Grier, Bailey and Carletti combined for fourth in 4:08.51.
Hoover added an individual state berth in the 100-meter hurdles, taking fourth in a personal-best 16.64, while Cambrie Swope qualified in the discus with a fourth-place throw of 36.10 meters.
By the end of the day, both Platte County-area programs combined to qualify athletes in 24 events for the state championships, continuing a strong tradition for the area schools. They move their attention to the 100th edition of the state championships, with Class 2 slated for May 22-23 at Adkins Stadium in Jefferson City.
