Park Hill sends five to state

PLATTE CITY – The Class 2 District 4 Girls’ Wrestling Tournament had 22 teams competing for a state berth and Park Hill ended fourth highest on the list, having five players keep their season alive at Platte County High School on Feb. 10.

Park Hill finished with 111 points, seven shy of runner-up North Kansas City. Allison Gonier (120), Angelina Vargas (125) and Rylin Beatty (135) all became individual district champions.

Park Hill junior Angelina Vargas has a chance to win her 3rd individual state title after becoming the Class 2 District 4 Champion in the 125-weight class on Feb. 10.

Gonier entered the tournament with 23 wins and four losses and added three more tallies in the win column – one pin and two decisions. In the championship, she came out on top over Winnetonka’s Queen Olivia Phillips and Courtwarming King Nathan Brushwood 8-1.

Along with Gonier, Vargas is going back to state with a chance to repeat as a champion, but the 125-pounder could be a 3-time champion if she takes care of business at Mizzou Arena. Vargas will head to state with an impressive 29-1 record on the season.

Beatty is making her second trip to state after going 1-2 there a season ago, pinning all three of her district opponents. She won by fall in 1:58 in the championship match against Ashley Slade from St. Joseph’s Central.

Ava Myers lost her second match in the 105-weight class – a 49-second pin against Oak Park’s Suzette Mendez – before fighting her way to the 3rd place match. Myers rematched with Mendez for third place and won by an 8-0 major decision.

Reilly Kastner is the fifth and final Park Hill state qualifier. The 130-pounder took fourth place and has a promising future, reaching such an accomplishment as a freshman.

Kastner pinned Dezariyah Brown (Truman) in 2:00 and lost by fall in 1:29 to Jorgie Johnston (Winnetonka). Kastner bounced back with a 3-2 decision win over Grain Valley’s Madison Hobbs and was pinned by William Chrisman’s Da’Neya West in 2:15.

Miranda Grantham (155) was the sole senior this season and her career came to an end with a 1-2 district record and 17-21 season record. Alice Keefe finished 21-18 on the year in the 110-weight class and 100-pounder Nellie Dantzscher won and lost 19 matches.
