Pirates secure Battle for Bragging Rights

The Platte County boys golf team has finally reclaimed the annual Battle for Bragging Rights, defeating Park Hill on April 22 at Tiffany Springs Golf Course in Kansas City.

The Pirates scored 153 as a team to comfortably secure the title, more than 20 strokes better than the Trojans’ score of 176 on the par 36 course.

“We all played very solid today and came away with a big victory,” Platte County head coach Trevor Short said. “It has been a long time since we have held the trophy and the team was very eager to play the match.”

Platte County’s top performer was senior Braden Hendee, who was an overall medalist with a score of 35. Junior Brayden Renno (38) and sophomore Bryson Hevalow (39) were also among the team’s leaders while sophomores Nicholas Cangelosi (41) and Jacob Mitchell (50) rounded out the title-clinching team performance.

“We came out of the gates swinging and making a big statement off the first tee,” Short said.

“The momentum continued throughout the rest of the nine holes and even the junior varsity was feeling the excitement with a few players going low in their round.”

The Pirates have a busy week that began on April 27 with the Kearney Invitational in Excelsior Springs. They get another district golf preview of the Paradise Point Golf Course in Smithville on April 29, when they compete in the 92 Showdown.

Platte County concludes the month with the Gavin McKenna Memorial Invitational hosted by Liberty High School on April 30 at Shoal Creek Golf Course. This week concludes the last hurrah before the conference tournament on May 4 and the district tournament on May 11.

“A lot of golf in a short period of time, but we are up for the challenge,” Short said.
