Platte City man charged with using tire iron in assault at Sonic

A Platte City man has been charged after allegedly assaulting another man with a tire iron in the parking lot of a local fast food restaurant.

On Saturday, June 10, Platte City Police Department officers responded to the 1300 block of Platte Falls Road in regards to a physical disturbance. When officers arrived, they made contact with the victim who was seriously injured during the altercation according to court documents.

The victim suffered a laceration with heavy swelling above his right eye. The victim stated he was struck with a tire iron and identified his attacker as 24-year-old Matthew Jones of Platte City.

That evening, members of the Platte County Sheriff’s Office and a Northland Regional Ambulance District crew were also on the scene outside of Sonic. Authorities could be seen interviewing witnesses.

Officers made contact with Jones later that day, and he agreed to give a statement. 

According to court documents, Jones said he was in possession of a tire iron and admitted to swinging it during the altercation but was unsure if he struck anyone.  Officers took photos of the injuries on the victim, and the weapon in question was seized and placed into evidence. 

Jones has been charged with misdemeanor assault and remains in custody at the Platte County Detention Center in lieu of $5,000 cash-only bond.
