Platte County boys volleyball impresses in debut

March 25, 2026 Nathan Dunn

Platte County players celebrate after scoring a point during the Hy-Vee Arena Invitational on March 21.

The Platte County boys volleyball team made its competitive debut on March 21, posting a 3-1 record at the 2026 Hy-Vee Arena Invitational Boys’ Volleyball Tournament.

The Pirates cruised through pool play with wins against Park Hill, Grandview and Northeast to earn a spot in the gold division playoff bracket. Platte County’s run concluded with a defeat in the playoff quarterfinal to Staley, who eventually won the tournament.

Junior team captains Preston Cavan and Joshua Echeverry impressed throughout the day for the Pirates, combining for 81 receptions. Cavan led with 26 digs while Echeverry led serving responsibilities with seven aces and 15 kills.

Platte County’s impressive showing in Pool D was the first three victories in their inaugural outing. The Pirates won all six sets in a dominant pool play showing.

Platte County senior Alex Stinson had 17 assists in the Pirates’ opening four matches in program history.

The Pirates’ first match against Park Hill proved to be the most challenging of the morning. The Pirates took a 24-18 lead, but a Park Hill rally gave the Pirates some concern until a Trojan attacking error sealed the first set for Platte County, 25-22.

Echeverry opened the second set with a string of aces to give the Pirates an 8-5 lead before jumping ahead 23-13 before finally shutting the door with a 25-18 win to seal Platte County’s first-ever victory.

There was no time to celebrate for Platte County, as they were immediately back for another match against Grandview. The Bulldogs provided an early scare in both sets, but the Pirates prevailed to win the first set 25-19 and the second set 25-18.

Platte County won its pool after sweeping both sets against Northeast, taking the first set 25-15 and the following set 25-20. Bryson Bertram led the Pirates’ attack with six kills while freshman Cooper Miles tallied four of his team-leading 21 assists on the day against Northeast.

The Pirates’ day ended in the gold bracket quarterfinal against Staley, losing both sets 25-19. Platte County will be back in action on Saturday, March 28, at the Oak Park Invitational.
