Platte County comes out of break with sixth win in a row

Platte County junior Lauren Stone (#4) scored six of her nine points in the first quarter of the Lady Pirates’ 53-11 triumph over Raytown to start the New Year with a bang on Jan. 3.

PLATTE CITY – For the first time since 2018, the Platte County girls’ basketball team (9-2) has won six in a row – most notably two straight one-sided victories in the New Year.

Platte County hosted Raytown (2-12) in its first game in 14 days, which resulted in a 53-11 beatdown on Jan. 3. The Lady Pirates had lost three straight in the series, with their last win coming in 2009.

Raytown started three freshmen and couldn’t handle Platte County’s pressure as there were 19 steals and 32 turnovers forced. The Lady Blue Jays didn’t make a single field goal in the opening half.

The game started off slow with five total possessions before either team got a shot off, but Platte County led 3-0 before that due to free throws. Lauren Stone had six points and five of her teammates scored two points to put the Lady Pirates up 16-0 after one quarter of play.

It took 8:36 of action for Raytown to finally score, albeit one point from its second trip to the charity stripe. Haley Barlow made a layup right before that to make the score 18-0 and Platte County scored the final 14 points of the first half.

Stone knocked down two triples on three tries to finish with nine points and three steals, while Haley Schank and Addie Ayers both shot 1-of-3 from deep. Schank had seven points and Ayers had six points.

Addy Schlake was the only player to score in double figures, ending with 10 points, six rebounds and three steals. Lydia Doole had a game-high five steals, along with seven points.

Platte County’s second game of 2024 was also at home and resulted in a 63-31 triumph over Belton (3-8) on Jan. 5. Delaney Childers, Schlake and Doole all had career days in the win.

Doole had the best outside shooting night of the season, converting on 4-of-5 from behind the arc to give her a career-high 16 points. Doole added three steals, as did Childers who also scored a career-high in points, scoring 11 on 4-of-6 shooting.

Schlake tied her career-best in points with 15, adding nine rebounds, one steal and one block. Rylee Carr added eight points and three rebounds.
