February 12, 2020 Rimsie McConiga

Tracy Verdoorn, bus driver for Platte County (left) was recognized for her Student Focus after seeing one of her elementary bus riders upset, then meeting that student’s specific need. She is joined by transportation director JT Thomas during the January board of education meeting.

The district calendar for the 2020-21 school year was approved by the Platte County board of education last month.

The vote was 5-0 with Sharon Sherwood, Gary Brown, Doug Doll, Amy MacCush and Alisha Elliott passing the proposal. Board members Buffy Smith and Dr. Gwendolyn Cooke were not present at the meeting.

The calendar calls for the first day for students on Tuesday, Aug. 25. Teachers will have in-service days starting the week prior.

There will be no school on Sept. 7, Oct. 12, Nov. 6, Jan. 18, Feb. 12 and 15, April 2 and 12.

Thanksgiving break will be Nov. 25-27; Christmas break will be Dec. 23-Jan 1, with classes resuming on Monday, Jan. 4. Spring break is March 15-19.

The last day of school will be Wednesday, May 26, with makeup days slated, if needed, on May 27-28.

KINDNESS MATTERS

Dr. Merri Beth Means, principal at Barry School, introduced students, as members of the Principal’s Advisory Committee, who participated in the planning and execution of Kindness Week, which was held in November.

The students provided an overview of their experiences to the Board of Education.
The committee planned daily activities to promote kindness. These included kindness-focused days such as a hat day, pajama day and more.
Additional activities included kindness bingo, handing out sweet treats as students entered the building, positive messages, and daily kindness challenges. Due to the huge success and positive impact, the Principal’s Advisory Committee is planning another Kindness Week in the spring.
