Platte County takes down Grandview

The Platte County football team is over .500 for the first time this season as the Pirates defeated Grandview 24-7 on Sept. 10 to bring their season record to 2-1.

After a scoreless first quarter by both teams, Carter Salzam stepped up to give the Pirates a 7-0 lead. The junior had an impressive punt return to put Platte County in scoring position and brought in a 4-yard touchdown reception from Jared Parsons on 4th and goal.

That was the first of three scoring drives in the quarter for Platte County. Nate Wells rushed in for a 1-yard score and Cole Rhoden knocked down a 36-yard field goal to give the Pirates a 17-0 halftime lead over the Bulldogs.

Late in the third quarter, Grandview scored its only touchdown when it intercepted Parsons and returned it for six points. The senior Pirate bounced back on the next drive and connected with Tristen Magusen for an 11-yard touchdown to put the game out of reach.

Parsons ended with 124 passing yards, two passing touchdowns and two interceptions while completing nine of his 15 pass attempts. Ben McDaniel was the leading rusher for Platte County as the senior rushed for 64 yards on 16 attempts.

Walls ended with 55 rushing yards on 10 carries and Salzman ended the night with four receptions for 57 yards and a touchdown. Platte County will be on the road again this week when they head to North Kansas City High School on September 17 at 7 p.m.
