Platte County benefited from six open spots and easily outraced Grandview on Tuesday, Jan. 24 to stay unbeaten in Suburban Conference Blue Division competition.
Grandview forfeited at the five lowest weight classes, and Platte County’s Nick Filger (138 pounds), Jackson Phan (152), Sage Smart (195), Casey Jumps (220) and Matthew Knopp (285) all had pins. The Pirates lost just two of the head-to-head matches, and their only victory without maximum points came at 170.
Platte County junior Dakota Schmidt, ranked No. 4 at 170 according to missouriwrestling.com, struggled in a matchup with Christian Johnson. Schmidt led 4-0 after the second period but needed a late escape to tie the score at 5-5.
With no points in the sudden-death overtime, the two exchanged escapes in the tiebreaker portion, forcing ultimate tiebreaker. Schmidt chose down for the 30-second period and scored an escape for a 7-6 win.
Platte County improved to 3-0 in Blue Division duals, and the Pirates were scheduled to take on Winnetonka on Tuesday, Jan. 31 before closing their dual slate Thursday, Jan. 2 against Raytown South. The result of the Winnetonka dual was not available at The Citizen’s deadline.
Lee’s Summit West triangular
Park Hill put some new faces in the lineup and still came away with a 51-12 win over Lee’s Summit West on Tuesday, Jan. 24 in Lee’s Summit, Mo.
Lee’s Summit West won four matches — all by decision — but also gave up three forfeits. Spencer Eastwood (145), Devin Winston (182) and Johnny Wilson (220) also had pins for the Trojans, while Trey Safford bumped to 120 and had an 18-3 technical fall against Carson Shank.
Winston bumped from 170 and pinned No. 5-ranked Zach Moore in 1 minute, 4 seconds.
Park Hill’s Thomas Lisher won 9-5 up at 160, while Ashton Sharp won 2-1 in overtime over Isaiah Childs at 220. Camron Stucker (126), Aidan Johnson (138), Carter Goslee (152) and Zach Suppes (170) lost decisions for the Trojans — all but Johnson either up a weight or filling in a spot.
Liberty 72, Park Hill South 7
The Panthers won the first and last matches Tuesday, Jan. 24 in Liberty, Mo.
In between, Liberty won 12 straight by either fall or forfeit in a Suburban Conference Red Division victory. Andrew Mikuls opened the dual at 138 with a 2-0 decision over Parker Houck with the winning takedown coming in the first period.
At 132, Carter Thomas — a 2015 Class 4 Missouri State Wrestling Championships qualifier — won a 15-3 decision, putting Charles Kirkpatrick to his back once in the first period.
West Platte had just four wrestlers in the lineup for a pair of duals Thursday, Jan. 26 in Gallatin, Mo.
Justin Howard (152) had the only win for the Bluejays in a 57-6 KCI Conference loss to Mid-Buchanan with a pin of Zaine Taylor, although Blake Davidson hung in during an 8-3 decision loss to Justin Roth at 126.
Parker Rotterman, a senior for Mid-Buchanan who goes to school at North Platte, took a forfeit at 160.
Only three matches were wrestled in the dual with Gallatin, which won 70-6. Davidson took a forfeit to open the matchup at 126.
West Platte triangular
Still minus two of their top contributors, the host Bluejays won just four matches in two duals Tuesday, Jan. 24 in Weston, Mo. Brayan Rodriguez (132) and Noah Conway (145) have both been sidelined with injuries in recent weeks.
In a 72-9 KCI Conference loss to Lawson, West Platte posted wins from Julian Trelow (7-2 decision at 138) and Jacob Brown (DQ at 152). The Bluejays’ 42-12 loss to Polo included five double forfeits. Trelow scored a pin at 138 to temporarily tie the score, while sophomore 285 Thomas Tharp closed the scoring with a pin in the final head-to-head matchup.
