Riverside Police Department vehicle hit prior to pursuit

A stolen vehicle led to damage to a Riverside Police Department vehicle on Saturday, May 12 at Argosy Casino.

According to police chief Chris Skinrood, the incident started when one of the patrol vehicle’s license plate reader hit on a stolen Dodge pickup.

After backup arrived, officers approached the occupied vehicle and the driver backed up and then pulled forward, hitting spike strips one of the officers laid down.

At that point, the driver went into reverse again, striking the police cruiser and drove off.

A pursuit happened and went into Kansas — even with a flat tire — before stopping near 18th Street. The suspect left the car and a short foot pursuit ensued before he was caught.

Skinrood noted tampering and fleeing charges were sent to the Platte County prosecuting attorney’s office, but the name of the suspect hasn’t been released.

The chief noted the police vehicle sustained significant damage and it is unknown if it will be repaired or will be totaled by the insurance company.
