Suburban softball roundup: Carter provides walk-off hit for Pirates

Madison Carter had a big day at the plate for Platte County on Monday, Sept. 30.

She drove in both runs to help the Pirates rally for a Suburban Conference Blue Division win at home, 2-1, against Grain Valley in eight innings.

The visiting Eagles went up 1-0 in the fourth inning on Morgan Robinson’s sac fly that brought home Avery Huffman, who led off with a triple.

In the sixth inning, Abby Reynolds singled and moved up on a sacrifice bunt. Carter then delivered an RBI single to tie the game.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Platte County (13-6, 8-0) had two runners thrown out at home and the game went into extra innings.

Hayden Humes drew a walk to open the bottom of the eighth inning and after an out, Gracie Erickson singled. Carter’s single to center field scored Humes to win it.

Carter had two of the six hits by the Pirates, who swept the season series from the Eagles.

Chloe Helmer gave up five hits in eight innings to earn the win on the mound.

Park Hill South 4, Central 2

Park Hill South 11, Central 5

In the opening game of a doubleheader on Monday, Sept. 30, a big first inning set the stage for the Panthers to win the Suburban Conference Red Division game in Riverside.

All three runs in the first inning came with two outs on the board, starting with Leslie Callahan’s RBI double. An error scored her and then another error by the Indians made it 3-0.

Chantice Phillips hit a solo home run in the fifth inning for Park Hill South. 

Phillips and Callahan each had two hits for the Panthers in game one, while Jesse Hagen earned the win by scattering six hits over seven innings.

The Panthers were the ‘road’ team in the second game and jumped ahead 6-0 in the first inning against the Indians. Five hits and two errors led the runs in the first and in the four-run second inning, Meggan Keller hit a two-run homer for Park Hill South.

WILL WRIGHT/Park Hill South High School

Park Hill South’s Chantice Phillips had a two-run home run against Truman on Tuesday, Sept. 24 at Park Hill South High School in Riverside.

Park Hill South pounded out 17 hits in the win, three each by Jolie McMinn, Kara Hagen and Jesse Hagen, while Keller had two.

Annabelle Winter got the win, giving up one earned run in seven innings.

Staley 6, Park Hill South 2

The Falcons scored four runs in the sixth inning to break a tie to pick up a Suburban Conference Red Division win on Thursday, Sept. 26 in Riverside.

All four of the runs for the Falcons in the sixth came off of home runs, two-run shots by Hailey Herman and Remy Asta.

Both of Park Hill South’s runs came in the third inning. Leslie Callahan singled home a run and Cassidy Taylor scored on a wild pitch.

Staley built a 2-0 lead on solo home runs from Josie Cooley and Paxton Donaldson.

Park Hill 5, Lee’s Summit North 3

Tied at 1, a four-run fifth inning lifted the Trojans to a divisional win on Thursday, Sept. 26 at Park Hill High School in Kansas City North.

Kali Day’s home run in the second inning was the first run for Park Hill, but the Broncos tied it in the top of the fifth inning on an error.

Chloe Strickland’s single scored two runs in the bottom half of the inning to break the tie. Kennedy Townsend doubled home a run and Day reached on an error that allowed Townsend to score to make it 5-1. Townsend had two of the Trojans’ four hits.

Sydney Cure’s two-run homer in the seventh accounted for the final runs for Lee’s Summit North in the Gold Division game.

Kalyn Jones gave up only four hits and struck out 10 in the win for Park Hill.

Platte County 16, Raytown South 0 

The Pirates ran a win streak to five in a row with another shutout win in a Blue Division game on Wednesday, Sept. 25 in Platte City.

For the second game in a row, Chloe Helmer threw a three-inning no-hitter and was an error away from a perfect game.

All nine batters had an RBI and eight of them had hits for Platte County.

The offense, like in the win the previous game, scored eight runs in each of the first two innings.

The first six batters reached safely in the first inning and Gracie Erickson had two triples in two at-bats and scored two runs. Madison Carter had RBI singles both times to score Erickson.

Halle Magee had an RBI single and RBI triple in the second inning, while Grace Heater had a pair that preceded Magee’s hits.

Platte County 16, Winnetonka 0

The offensive barrage against divisional foes continued with an another three-inning win on Tuesday, Sept. 24 in Platte City.

The Pirates scored eight runs in each inning to blast the Griffins, which didn’t get a hit off of Chloe Helmer.

Allison Gill and Abby Reynolds had two-run singles in the first inning. A bases-loaded walk, a sac fly and two passed balls accounted for the other four runs.

Madison Shields (single) and Anna Cesaro (double) each drove in two runs on hits in the second inning  before Paige Rocha’s three-run triple capped the scoring.

Helmer struck out six of the nine batters she faced.

Truman 9, Park Hill South 7

The Patriots scored six unanswered runs to secure a Suburban Conference Red Division victory on Tuesday, Sept. 24 in Riverside.

Park Hill South took its only lead with a three-run first inning, keyed by Leslie Callahan’s two-run double. Annabelle Winter’s single scored Callahan to break a tie.

Truman scored three runs in the second, another in the third and two in the fourth to make it 8-3.

Chantice Phillips drove in three of the next four runs for Park Hill South, with an RBI single and a two-run homer run in the sixth inning. Winter hit an RBI double in the seventh inning, which brought the tying run to the plate but a ground ball ended the game.

Phillips had three hits, while Winter had two for Park Hill South. 

Truman hit three home runs, two by Kara Amos, who drove in five.

Platte County 18, Grandview 0 

The Pirates scored 10 runs in the first and added eight more in the second to pick up a win in only three innings on Monday, Sept. 23 in Grandview.

Eight different players had at least one RBI against the Bulldogs in the Suburban Conference Blue Division game. The first four batters all drew walks against Grandview to set the stage for the big inning. Halle Magee and Hayden Humes had two-run singles and Paige Rocha had a two-run double. Grace Heater drove in runs during her first (walk) and second (ground out) at-bats in the inning.

In the second, Gracie Erickson and Rocha each had two-run doubles to help make it 15-0.

Chloe Helmer gave up two hits to earn the win on the mound.

Park Hill 2, Lee’s Summit West 1

Kaylyn Jones fanned 16 and gave up only two hits to vault the Trojans to a Suburban Conference Gold Division victory on Monday, Sept. 23 at Park Hill High School.

Park Hill scored in the first inning and the fourth to take a 2-0 lead and held off a late charge by the Titans.

Lee’s Summit West had the bases loaded in the top of the sixth inning but couldn’t get the tying run across against Jones. A two-out rally featured a walk and then Sadie Vahle’s RBI single. Taylor Pannell was hit by a pitch to load the bases but a ground ball back to Jones ended the scoring threat.

Park Hill had four hits in the fourth inning but managed just one run when Miranda LaMunyon scored on Chloe Strickland’s RBI single. The Trojans loaded the bases with two more singles, but Pannell got two strikeouts to end the inning. Pannell finished with eight strikeouts in six innings. 

Sam Bertoncino had an RBI single in the first inning that scored Kennedy Townsend, who reached on an error.

Platte County: The Pirates will have three conference games over the next six days, starting with a game on Thursday, Oct. 3 at Smithville. A road game at Kearney on Monday, Oct. 7 follows before hosting Grandview on Tuesday, Oct. 8 in the penultimate Red Division game.

Park Hill: The Trojans played at home versus Staley on Tuesday, Oct. 1, but the results were not available by press time. Park Hill returns to divisional play on Thursday, Oct. 3 hosting Blue Springs South and then hosts Ray-Pec on Tuesday, Oct. 8. In between those two, the Trojans play at Blue Springs on Monday, Oct. 7.

Park Hill South: The Panthers played at Liberty on Tuesday, Oct. 1 in a Red Division game, but results were not available by press time. Park Hill South returns home for matchups against Liberty North (Oct. 3) and Lee’s Summit (Oct. 8).
