Human skull discovered near Waldron

January 26, 2012 Citizen Staff Report

The Platte County Sheriff’s Department is still investigating a Platte County hunter’s recent discovery — a human skull. At about 6 p.m. Jan. 19, the Sheriff’s Department received a call from Shannon Gramm, who was walking in a field near Waldron when he found a human skull. The skull was located on the Missouri River levee about 200 yards from the river in an area covered by flood waters for most of the summer.

On Jan. 20, a search was conducted with the assistance of the Gladstone Police Department. Bone fragments were discovered nearby and were preliminarily identified as human remains, though they have been sent for a laboratory analysis. An anthropologist will also check the skull to try to determine its approximate age.

“We don’t know if it was there before the flood or if it was deposited there by the flood,” said Captain Erik Holland. “It’s not uncommon for flood waters to sometimes disturb cemeteries and unmarked graves.”
