The West Platte girls and North Platte boys left the Class 2 District 8 Track and Field Championships with team trophies on May 9 in Chillicothe, while both programs also produced a long list of sectional qualifiers and standout performances.
West Platte’s girls totaled 123.5 points to hold off runner-up Penney (103) for the district championship, while North Platte’s boys piled up 134.5 points to finish ahead of Penney (111) and West Platte (104).
The Blue Jays’ girls squad relied on balance and depth throughout the meet, while the Panthers’ boys team dominated the distance races and relays.
West Platte’s boys also delivered a record-breaking moment as the 4x800-meter relay set a new school record. The quartet of Noah Rees, Collin Frederick, Charles Trease and Samuel Miller won the event in 8 minutes, 17.15 seconds.
North Platte senior Drake Keraus turned in a dominant distance performance, sweeping the 800, 1,600 and 3,200-meter runs. Keraus won the 800 in 1:57.82, captured the 1,600 in 4:40.73 and added the 3,200 title in 10:17.02.
The Panthers also got a boost from Cooper Cummings, who finished runner-up in both the 100 and 200-meter dashes. Cummings ran 11.15 seconds in the 100 and 22.69 in the 200. Isaac Wright added a third-place finish in the 400-meter dash and helped North Platte win the 4x100 relay alongside Dylan Armstrong, Cummings and Hudson Yarc in 43.57.
North Platte’s 4x400 relay team of Keraus, Jase Smith, Austin Spencer and Wright also qualified to sectionals with a third-place finish in 3:33.17.
West Platte’s boys team produced several district champions. Brady McMillan captured the 400-meter title in 50.59 and teamed with Layn Kear, Blaze Masoner and Alexander Kinslow to win the 4x200 relay in 1:30.46. The Blue Jays also won the 4x400 relay behind McMillan, Eric Beard, Samuel Miller and Kinslow in 3:28.61.
Kinslow added another district title in the 300-meter hurdles with a winning time of 40.51, while Charles Trease placed third in the 1,600 and runner-up in the 3,200. Collin Frederick added a fourth-place finish in the 3,200.
In the field events, West Platte’s Khysen Heskin earned a sectional berth in the javelin with a third-place throw of 42.34 meters. North Platte’s Cameron Wortham qualified in the discus with a third-place throw of 42.60 meters.
North Platte also picked up points in the hurdles and pole vault. Galen Christiansen finished second in the 110 hurdles and second in the 300 hurdles, while Creighton Kubly tied for third in the pole vault.
On the girls side, a balanced West Platte effort guided the Blue Jays to the district championship.
The Blue Jays qualified athletes for sectionals in distance races, hurdles, relays, jumps and throws. Caroline Ransome led the way with a district title in the 1,600 in 5:32.75 and added a runner-up finish in the 3,200.
Charlotte Gillis also advanced to sectionals with a third-place finish in the 1,600, while Megan Cline qualified in the 3,200 after taking third.
West Platte’s middle-distance group also excelled in the 800. Payton Reber placed third in 2:37.27, and Jersey O’Neal earned the final sectional berth with a fourth-place finish.
In the hurdles, Hana Hoover qualified in both events, placing fourth in the 100-meter hurdles and fourth in the 300 hurdles. Addison Bailey added a runner-up finish in the 300 hurdles and won the triple jump with a mark of 10.80 meters.
West Platte’s relays were also pivotal in the team providing championship points. The 4x100 relay team of Nora Meyerkorth, Sophie Grier, Hana Hoover and Katherine Carletti placed third.
The 4x200 relay of Addison Bailey, Sophie Grier, Nora Meyerkorth and Katherine Carletti also took third, while the 4x400 relay team of Meyerkorth, Grier, Bailey and Carletti finished runner-up by just .01 seconds. West Platte’s 4x800 relay team of Payton Reber, Charlotte Gillis, Megan Cline and Caroline Ransome also added a third-place finish.
In field events, Cambrie Swope qualified to sectionals with a third-place finish in the discus, while Katherine Carletti advanced in the pole vault after taking second.
North Platte’s girls were led by a strong distance group and relay success. Chloe Heckman qualified in both distance races, finishing runner-up in the 1,600 before winning the district title in the 3,200 in 12:09.25.
Farrah Williams claimed the district championship in the 800-meter run in 2:30.01, while Graci Williams placed second in the 400-meter dash to qualify for sectionals.
The Panthers also advanced all three relays to sectionals. North Platte placed fourth in the 4x100 relay with Morgan Ball, Megan Schuster, Farrah Williams and Graci Williams. The same quartet then won the 4x400 relay in 4:08.24, while Graci Williams, Morgan Ball, Heckman and Farrah Williams captured the district title in the 4x800 relay.
