West Platte places high at Atchison

West Platte sophomore Addison Bailey won the triple jump at the Atchison Invitational on April 4.

ATCHISON – West Platte trackletes Miles McHenry, Julia Pattison, Addison Bailey and Sam Baker all walked away with individual gold medals from the Atchison Invitational on April 4.

West Platte went across state lines to compete in the meet and had some success as the girls won and the boys took second place. The Lady Blue Jays had six total first place finishes in various events.

Pattison won the mile and the 2-mile with times of 5:42.82 and 12:25.1, respectively. She was just about five seconds ahead of the runner-up in the mile and was 35.44 seconds faster than anyone else in the 2-mile, followed by third-place finisher Peyton Reber who ended in 13:25.16

Two of the three West Platte girls’ relays came out in front of the pack with the 4x800 taking fourth place in 11:32.95. The 4x100 won in 53.33 seconds and the 4x400 took first place with a time of 4:31.29.

Sam Baker was on the 4x100 and succeeded in the individual races, winning the 400-meter dash in 1:03.51. She was the third 200-meter runner to cross the finish line, doing so in 27.94 seconds.

Bailey led the way in field events, winning the triple jump with a 33’0.5 leap. Klaira Groom ended in fourth place in the high jump and Pattison was one spot behind her with jumps of 4’8 and 4’6, respectively.

Tatum Worden had the third highest pole vault, clearing the 6’6 bar. Maddison McMillan threw the javelin 101’3 to earn fourth place and Maizie French claimed fifth place in the shot put with a 29’ heave.

Blair McHenry was the second-place 800-meter runner, finishing just ahead of McMillan and Avery Holmes with a time of 2:36.78. McMillan crossed the finish line in 2:38.91 and Holmes finished in 2:42.83.

Hailey Peters ended in sixth place in both hurdles with times of 18.57 seconds and 54.14 seconds. Bailey was seventh place in the 300-meter with a time of 54.74 seconds as the ending was tight.

McHenry led the way for the boys, taking first place in two of his three individual events. He won the javelin and 110-meter hurdles and ended in eighth place in the 400-meter dash behind three of his teammates.

McHenry just beat out Alex Kinslow in the hurdles by 0.34 seconds, crossing the finish line in 17.05 seconds. He threw the javelin 162’8 to beat out fourth-place Khysen Heskin who had a 118’8 throw.

August Hill was the first of four Blue Jays in the 400-meter dash, taking third place in 53.61 seconds. Will Shafer took fifth place in 54.03 seconds, followed by Kinslow in sixth place in 54.85 seconds and McHenry in 57.2 seconds.

Brady McMillan took fifth place in the 100 and 200-meter dashes, ending the races in 12.04 seconds and 24.34 seconds, respectively. Jonah McGivern earned fourth place in the 800-meter run in 2:11.22 and Noah Rees claimed third place in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 11:17.75.

The West Platte boys’ relays had some success, with the 4x400 winning with a time of 3:39.84. The 4x100 was the runner-up in 45.79 seconds and the 4x800 took sixth place in 10:49.04.

Hill cleared the 6’ high jump bar to take second place and Joseph Blake leaped 18’1 in the long jump pit to claim third place – right ahead of fourth-place Mark Sanders who jumped 17’10. Matthew Haynes threw the discus 106’7 and earned fifth place.
