The Weston Board of Aldermen last week voted to stop the installation of Flock traffic cameras due to community backlash.
In December 2025 the Board of Aldermen voted on installation of the license plate reading Flock cameras, with a tied vote. Mayor Kim Kirby broke the tie with a yes vote. However, a Facebook group titled “Deflock Weston: Citizens for Responsible Public Safety” was created in February and has gained nearly 200 members.
At the Monday, April 13 meeting of the Board of Aldermen, Alderman Joyce Burch moved to stop the installation. The motion passed, with Alderman Greg Hoffman absent.
The license plate readers were to be installed on Highway 45 at Welt Street, Highway H and at the northern city limits. A regular camera was scheduled to be installed on Main Street.
Kirby said the city will now work through the process of canceling the contract with its legal team. The December contract totaled $45,000 over the course of three years.
Platte City recently installed Flock cameras at high-traffic intersections along Highway 92.
