Winning Women gather to support local business

Winning Women Wednesday members took to the streets in Parkville recently to shop for the holidays.

About 30 women packed their purses with marked $20 bills to find the perfect holiday gifts in their hometown.

The WWW group was founded almost a year ago by four Weatherby Lake women. The group meets on a monthly basis to discuss civic issues, support food drives and co-host a Women’s Leadership Forum.

They took the opportunity to use their meeting on Dec. 3 to focus on supporting businesses that are locally owned.

“Our local small business owners in Platte County are seeing a very slow holiday shopping season, and it is up to us to keep our hometown from becoming a ghost town,” said Lynn Hinkle Roberts, one of the Winning Women Wednesday founders.

The shopping expedition began at the Parkville Wine House for a holiday toast, and then proceeded to the boutique next door, Cheeky Bird, where owner and WWW member Stephanie Herbig offered the group special discounts on candles, vintage items, and holiday apparel.

As the group made their way through Parkville they found more unique gifts as they journeyed south. They filled bags with discounted treasures under holiday lights. Roberts said “they shopped until they finally dropped at the VFW Alley Bar.”

WWW members were committed to sending a clear message – shop in your hometown first.

“You will definitely find the holiday spirit on Main Street in pretty Parkville,” Roberts said. “Unlike online shopping and big box retailers, those $20 bills marked with WWW will keep circulating locally to keep our community economically viable. We want to support Parkville retailers and restaurants first because our dollars stay home and circulate throughout the town. With rising prices and property taxes, this focus on buying local can make a real difference. We want them to survive and thrive!”
