Wrestling roundup: Gillespie take 1st at Lee’s Summit

Park Hill South took 10th place at the Lee’s Summit Holiday Tournament on Saturday, Dec. 21 at Lee’s Summit High School.

Twenty-two teams from the Kansas City, St. Louis, Columbia area, as well as Iowa and Kansas took part in this tournament.

Odessa won the team title, followed by Lee’s Summit North and Francis Howell to round out the top three.

Cameron Gillespie won the title in 182-pounds for Park Hill South. The senior secured seven wins on his way to the championship. He won all four of his pool matches by pins and kept that streak going in the quarterfinals by sticking Kolby Conkin of Ft. Zumwalt South in 3:14. In the semifinals, Gillespie stuck Staley’s Jack Stoffel in 1:27.

In the championship, Gillespie won by a 10-4 decision over Odessa’s Jake Evinger.

Kale Slater (138) finished fourth for the Panthers after going 3-3.

Slater beat Luke Dierkes of Lindbergh, 5-3, in the quarterfinals before falling to Owen Twaddle of Columbia Rock Bridge by a pin in the semifinals. Slater lost 4-2 to Gage Moorman of Centerville, Iowa in the third-place match.

Max Rosario (170) took fifth, winning five of his six matches. He lost in the quarterfinals to Lindbergh’s Connor Kuehler by a 6-5 decision. Rosario won his final two, taking down Springfield Kickapoo’s Marquese Gaten by a 9-0 major decision before winning 10-4 against Oak Grove’s Adrian Whitehead in the fifth-place match.

The Battle of Katy Trail

Mid-Buchanan took third place, while West Platte finished 38th at the Battle at Katy Trail in Sedalia on Saturday, Dec. 21.

Centralia took first place, while fellow KCI school Lathrop was the runner-up in the 42-team field.

Mid-Buchanan had three North Platte students competing. Seth Cruz (195) was the highest finish with a 10th-place showing. He picked up three wins in the tournament.

Clayton Rotterman (120) placed 17th and J.P. Hartigan (220) finished 19th.

Rotterman won his final four matches, the last three by decisions. Hartigan picked up three victories.

The best finish for West Platte came from Peyson Chandler (126), who took 12th place.
