Thousand Oaks Otters win 3rd straight championship

August 11, 2018 Citizen Staff Report

Paige Riekhof, of the Riss Lake Riptides, competed in the Northland Conference Swimming Championships on Wednesday, July 18 at the Springs Aquatic Center in Kansas City. The recent Park Hill South graduate tied for the highest point total with 81. She will be swimming for the Kansas Jayhawks later this year.

The Thousand Oaks Otters swim team won its third consecutive Northland Conference Championships title held at the Springs Aquatic Center, Kansas City, Mo., July 16-18.

The Otters lead the scoring with 3,400 points, with the New Mark Stingrays following with 2,619 points.

While the Otters finished first, five swimmers tied for first-place with 81 points each: Isaac Dierker (12, Thousand Oaks Otters), Chris Franson (14, Brooktree), Chloe Myers (14, Thousand Oaks Otters), Paige Riekhof (18, Riss Lake Riptides) and Grant Sloan (18, Kearney).

One of the top five swimmers, Paige Riekhof, a 2018 graduate of Park Hill South High School, is heading to University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kan., on a swimming and academic scholarship in mid-August.

Riekhof was not only happy to finish her childhood swimming days on top, but she was also excited to be a good example to the younger kids on her team, the Riss Lake Riptides.

“I also coach the younger swimmers,” she said, “my favorite part of it all was showing them hard work pays off.”

Now that her time with the Riptides is up, she’s looking forward, especially as a student at Kansas. “I’ve been wanting to go to Kansas all my life, it’s going to be nice to start school, swim, and get my future started.”

Even though not every first-place swimmer is headed off to college this year, or done with their childhood team, it was still pretty exciting for them to do so well.

“My hard work paid off, it felt amazing,” said Isaac Dierker. “I knew how tough the competition was, I was very proud of how well I did.”

According to Donovan Smith, president of the Northland Swim Conference, this year’s championships also lauded seven Northland Conference records.

The team award for most improved went to the Walnut Creek Swim Team, for an average of 3.42 seconds improvement per swim during the dual meet season. The Conference Spirit Award, voted on by team coaches, went to The Coves Swim Team. The Tim Kidder Memorial Award went to Kim Bernhardt, a New Mark Stingray, for her personal dedication and contributions to the Northland Swim Conference and the broader sport of swimming.

The 2018 season brought a new team, the Woodneath Farms Whitecaps, and more than 1,600 swimmers this season and 1,508 swimmers swam in at least one dual meet, which created 18,086 swims, 867 competitors at the championships, with 504 swimmers making it to the finals.
