Incident closes Hwy. 45

A disturbance caused the closure of  Highway 45 near Baker Road for two hours last week.

At about 1:45 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 3, the Platte County Sheriff’s Office responded to the area to check the welfare of a male party sitting in the northbound lane of Hwy. 45 by a black sedan with its emergency flashers on.  While deputies were en route it was reported that the man was attempting to flag down other drivers, stop vehicles, and possibly get into other people’s cars.  There was also a report that a shot was fired prior to deputies arriving on scene.

Once on scene, deputies contacted the man who was uninjured but was incoherent and appeared to be having a severe mental health crisis.  The man was detained and transported to an area hospital for evaluation and placement on a 96-hour involuntary mental health commitment.  There was a spent shell casing, and an unfired round of ammunition recovered at the scene.  Hwy. 45 was shut down for approximately two hours while the incident was investigated.

The Platte County Sheriff’s Office is asking for anyone that was traveling on Hwy. 45 Hwy near Jones Myer Road and the Village of Farley between the hours of 1:30 p.m. and 2:15 p.m. and observed any part of this reported incident, contact the communications center via the non-emergency number (816-858-3521) and reference case number 01-25-02965.
