Northmoor resident petitions board to change rental restrictions

Many communities are encouraging their residents to rent out their homes to visitors for the FIFA World Cup coming to Kansas City this summer, with many communities relaxing short-term rental guidelines for the duration of the cup. Northmoor residents are petitioning city leadership to change the rules for short-term rentals in their community.

Resident Nickolas Pierce launched a petition over the weekend aiming to urge the mayor and board of aldermen to lift the city’s ban on short-term rentals from April to August.

“Sign this petition to help Northmoor homeowners benefit from this once-in-a-lifetime event,” Pierce wrote on the petition, stating homeowners could make up to $36,000 in rental fees, bringing $11 million into the city’s economy. He also suggests background checks for guests, strict rules on noise and how many people may stay per house as well as requiring hosts to register with the city.

According to Northmoor City Clerk Peggy Holley, the petition that had been circulating was submitted to the city without the accompanying signatures. After reviewing the matter, city leadership does not intend to make any changes to the city’s short-term rental ordinances during the FIFA World Cup this summer.

Northmoor’s current ordinance already allows short-term rentals with a minimum stay of 30 days. Accordingly, private homeowners may rent their homes on a short-term basis in compliance with the existing regulations.
