West Platte wrestling has woes on senior night

West Platte 138-pound wrestler Jhett Chandler won both of his matches in the triangular against St. Joseph’s Central and Summit Christian Academy, including a win by fall over Seth Stricklin on senior night on Jan. 18.

WESTON – On senior night, the West Platte boys’ wrestling team came up short in a triangular against St. Joseph’s Central and Summit Christian Academy on Jan. 18.

West Platte was defeated 54-23 to Central and 42-36 to Summit Christian. In the match with the Indians, there were five weight classes that were left open – two by the hosting team and three by the eventual winner.

Brody Scott (165), Cuin Vincent (120) and Jhett Chandler (138) earned wins by forfeit to make up for 18 of West Platte’s 23 points. The only Blue Jay who wrestled an opponent and won was 132-pounder Colton DePetre who pinned Arnee Martin in 2:18.

West Platte had a better outing against Summit Christian, while earning two of the three forfeit victories in the match. Chandler started the match off with a win by fall over Seth Stricklin.

Ryan Handgen put West Platte up 12-0 with a 2:49 pin over 144-pounder Elijah Cox. Summit Christian pinned the next four wrestlers to take control of the match, 24-12.

The match was tied with two straight Blue Jay wins, which included a forfeit victory handed to Sam Newcomb in the 285-weight class. Matthew Haynes (215) pinned Zachary Butler in 56 seconds, the quickest of the match.

Vincent was the final Blue Jay to best an opponent, pinning Jonah Janssen in 2:49. DePetre came away from the triangular with two wins, including a forfeit against Summit Christian.

The West Platte girls were defeated 42-0 by St. Joseph’s Central on the day. Addison Bailey was pinned in 3:59 and Hana Hoover lost by fall in 4:32.
